Tips on saving money: Plumbing edition

14 April 2020 Articles

Saving money on your plumbing and water bill is always important, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic, following the loss of jobs, and a drop in the economy, saving money has never been more important.

Of course you can do more conventional things to save money such as cooking from home or skipping that barista made coffee, but if you want to save big, consider these plumbing tips and tricks.

Conserve water

This tip is easy – conserve your water by ensuring that you’re only using what you need. Reduce your time in the shower by limiting washes to 2-5 minutes. This can sometimes be difficult as we approach those cold autumn/ winter mornings, but cutting your shower time in half will help you save more on your water bill.

Be sure to check for any leaky pipes, as this is one of the main culprits for a higher water bill than expected. Whether your toilet, your tap or your shower head is leaking. Although these leaks seem small, your water usage will skyrocket if the leaks are unsolved for days or weeks on end. A few drops will collect overtime and create buckets worth of wasted water.

Check your pipes and tapware

Your pipes and tapware must stay in a good condition if you want them to function properly. Replacing your old taps will do more than just enhance the general appearance of your bathroom or kitchen. Taps control the amount and flow of water passing through, therefore, functional, updated and eco-friendly taps will help control water flow and the amount of water being used by up to 40%.

If you notice any damp areas on the walls, floors, or any surfaces it may indicate cracked or broken pipes. It is important to routinely check and maintain the health of your pipes. If there are any cracks or breaks, water will leak from your pipes increasing the water bill as well as cause dangers to your plumbing.

Install water saving toilets and shower heads

Have you ever considered making your home more environmentally friendly? Try installing flow restrictors on your shower and toilet. This will work on your shower by restricting the amount of water which flows through it. It will result in a decrease in water pressure, however your water usage will be cut 50-70%.

In terms of your toilet, the water used to flush will significantly decrease by installing a water efficient toilet. An ordinary toilet uses approximately 25L of water in each flush, whereas a new water efficient toilet can be as low as 6L per flush. The only downside is that it is more costly to install, however, your wallet will thank you in the long run.

Keep your drains clean

The common causes of a clogged drain are the buildup of debris, sediment, wet wipes, sanitary products,  hair, dental floss and many other products will clog your drain and limit its usage. Make sure that only liquids are going down your drain, and only the right liquids are going down.

Substances such as grease or oil will solidify, adhere to the pipes and create blockages. It is simple enough to fix a blocked drain, but if you require help, leave it to the professionals.
