When to call in the experts for gas appliance servicing

28 August 2019 Articles

Natural Gas is an efficient, environmentally friendly and cost effective way to power your home. Gas appliances can be found in almost every room of the house, from gas heaters to hot water systems, stove tops and ovens, clothes dryers and even your trusty BBQ.

These appliances are built to last and are cheaper to run than their electric counterparts, but do need some TLC to ensure they run safely and efficiently.

It is essential to call in fully qualified gas fitters to install, repair and regularly service all gas appliances in your home or business, to ensure the safety of your family members and employees.

It is also important to be proactive. Make a habit of routinely checking your gas appliances to ensure they are functioning correctly. This way, small problems can be promptly fixed by professional Perth plumbers, helping to avoid emergency situations down the track.

Here are the warning signs to look for which can alert you to a faulty and potentially dangerous appliance:

Your gas appliance is difficult to start

Blockages can prevent the pilot from lighting properly, which makes your appliance difficult to start.

This blockage could be due to dirt and debris collecting in the pipes, which affects the flow of gas, or damage to the tube.

The flames on your stove or water heater are burning yellow instead of blue

This is an obvious sign to call in our Perth plumbing team for servicing and repairs.

A blue gas flame indicates complete combustion, meaning you aren’t wasting gas and money. Red or yellow gas flames can signal incomplete combustion, wasted gas and a serious safety hazard.

This could be due to a blockage in the system, which is restricting air supply to the appliance. It can also mean your appliance is producing hazardous carbon monoxide, which is odourless and colourless, but poisonous.

In the case of this plumbing emergency, we highly recommend you to turn off the appliance and call No Probs Plumbing for immediate gas repairs.

Oxidisation on your pipes

Copper sulphates can accumulate on water heating pipes, which can eventually damage the appliance. If you notice a green build-up on your pipes, call in a gas fitter for service in Perth.

Smell of gas

The smell of gas (similar to the smell of rotten eggs) in a building is not normal.

These steps must be taken to eliminate any potential hazard that may arise from leaking gas:

  1. Turn off the supply of gas to the building at the meter or cylinder. Turning off the gas at the meter may not stop the leak, as it may be coming from a nearby gas main or service.
  2. If you consider it necessary, evacuate the building.
  3. Eliminate ignition sources by extinguishing any naked flames. Stop any smoking, the striking of matches or lighters and do not touch any electrical switches.
  4. If lights are on, leave them on.
  5. Ventilate the building by opening all the doors and windows.
  6. Call No Probs Plumbing and Gas on (08) 9315 5545, we will send a fully licensed specialist out to you immediately.
  7. Do not enter the gas-affected area.

Your gas hot water system is making a rumbling noise

If your gas hot water is making a popping or rumbling noise, it is likely your hot water heater tank has a build-up of sediment or scale.

The noise occurs when the water boils underneath the sediment.

As the sediment drops to the bottom of the tank, which is where the gas burner is located, heat transfer from the gas burner to the water is delayed. This can cause the water heater to overheat, sustain damage to the inner lining and weaken the steel tank, leading to a leak.

In the long run, this could require a complete replacement.
